Polaroid’s Action Camera made its debut in Whistler at the 3rd annual Whistler Longboard Festival which took place July 5-7. As a sponsor of the Big Air Competition, Freestyle Showcase and the World Cup Downhill Race, Polaroid Action amped up the festival with prize giveaways and no shortage of entertainment.
The Polaroid Big Air heated up Olympic Plaza on Friday afternoon showcasing top riders from around the world throwing tricks off a custom-built kicker into a giant Acro Bag. Polaroid was on site with t-shirt and camera giveaways getting the crowd pumped up and kicking off the festival in true action-sports fashion.
On Saturday the Polaroid Freestyle Showcase went down in the center of Whistler Village and featured skate legend Kevin Harris along with Canada’s top freestyle skateboarders Ryan Brynelson and Andy Anderson.
Pulling double duty, Polaroid also played host to their team of riders up at the World Cup Downhill venue that same day. Along with offering a cool place to sit down and chill out, they also gave away a generous supply of cameras to fans and supporters at the race. On point with the needs of athletes and filmmakers alike, their sponsorship at this year’s festival was the perfect match, giving them inordinate exposure, branding opportunities and recognition for the Polaroid Action Cam.

2013 will mark the third year of The Whistler Longboard Festival in Whistler. This year's festival is comprised of four main events: Downhill Freeride and Race at The Whistler Sliding Centre at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, the Skate Showcase in the heart of Whistler Village Stroll, a local Skate Competition and the Skate + Shoot Longboard Biathlon at the Whistler Olympic Park. The Festival will take place over four days from Thursday, July 4th through Sunday, July 7th, 2013.
It was recently announced by the International Downhill Federation that Whistler's downhill competition has been added to the World Cup Circuit. Its exciting news for Whistler, adding another World Class event to its roster. This year's event will feature live streaming, improved access to the downhill course, advanced timing systems and of course a beer garden to sit back and watch the action with a cold brewsky from the Whistler Brewing Company.

On March 4th, 2010, the Community Foundation of Whistler will launch an inaugural fundraising event in support of the Kathy Barnett Memorial Fund. The fund was created in 2008 in memory of Kathy Barnett, a former Whistler resident and CFOW Director. Kathy was a strong, community-oriented woman who gave of herself for the betterment of others. Together with her husband, Kathy co-founded the Pique Newsmagazine, a successful independent weekly newspaper.
The luncheon will feature a high profile keynote speaker who will address the topic of Women and Leadership, as well as profile women who have received grants from the endowment fund. The event will be held at the beautiful and majestic Fairmont Chateau Whistler and will be hosted by Chris Quinlin. Attendees of the event will have the exciting opportunity to bid on one of a kind Whistler experiences with the company of influential and inspiringwomen and men as mentors for the day. Through a celebration of Kathy’s legacy, the event will inspire local women and build ongoing financial support for the endowment fund.
This event has been made possible by the support of Pique Newsmagazine, the Whistler Chamber of Commerce, Long Run Productions, Vancouver Magazine, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, the Women of Whistler as well as a dedicated volunteer event committee.
You didn’t think the party would stop in Whistler after March, did you? This past weekend, the 15th Annual TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival kicked off in Whistler Village. 10 days of media showcases, outdoor concerts, film premieres, free samples, ski bunnies, neon and of course, legendary parties that you may not remember or not soon forget.
The coolest part about this festival is that is probably one of the most artistic action sports festivals out there. In the middle of Village Square, Jordan Soak spray paints the hood of a Chevy Camaro, with the sweet sounds of indie band City of Glass in the background. Later on, I found myself in the depths of Maxx Fish on a wonderfully sunny early evening to witness in the first Pecha Kucha night in Whistler. I know, what the? Meaning “chit chat” in Japanese, the event originated in Tokyo as a way for young designers and artists to network and share their work with each other. The format is set up so that each presenter shows 20 photos and has 20 seconds to share thoughts and dialogue about each. Considering there was a Periodontist, a Zoologist and a former Sex Experimentalist, it was definitely entertaining to say the least.
And it wouldn’t be a true Whistler event if there wasn’t a teaser for the next season’s extreme sport, enter Anthill Films (formerly the Collective). I was invited to attend the premiere of their new film “Follow Me”. Amazing cinematography and some of the most talented (and good looking) mountain bikers in the biz, all in a recipe for a great flick!
If you didn’t get up to Whistler this past weekend, don’t worry, there are 6 days left of the Festival including the not to be missed the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown (sorry folks its already sold out), the street wise Fashion Show and you can check out the local Whistler celebrity’s in the Chairlift Revue on Sunday night.
As a self proclaimed sponsorship geek, there is an event that I look forward to every year - the Canadian Sponsorship Forum – and this weekend it is coming to my town, Whistler. The Forum is gathering of top professionals from the sponsorship community in Canada. In years past, the event has taken place in Toronto, Quebec City, Calgary, Halifax and Vancouver, so to host this event in our little mountain town is truly exciting.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Building Sponsorship Equity” and appropriately it is being held in partnership with the Canadian Paralympic Committee during the 2010 Paralympics. Representatives from some of Canada’s top brands including Rogers, Coca Cola, Panasonic and Kraft will come together with some of Canada’s premiere properties including Vancouver 2010 Olympic Committee, Vancouver Whitecaps and Whistler Blackcomb, to discuss topics on Canada’s changing sponsorship-scape.
Of particular interest, Saturday morning will feature a discussion of “Translating Equity into Sales” with a panel of Canadian Paralympic Committee sponsors including Veronica Piacek of Pfizer Canada and Scott McCloy of Worksafe BC. A unique feature of the Canadian Sponsorship Forum is that every Forum is centered on a major event and features a panel discussion of sponsors involved. I last attended the Forum during the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007 and the sponsor panel was facinating, connecting sponsorship activations with the people who brought them to life.
The forum organizers, TrojanOne, have put together an attractive agenda with some truly unique networking opportunities including a gathering at the sold out Paralympic Closing Ceremonies taking place at the Whistler Medals Plaza on Sunday, March 21st. I’ve been instructed that the dress code is “cheer gear”, how very Whistler!
